R+ Horse Riding Instructor In Wales
Helping riders rebuild trust with their horse
Something's off, and you know it. You're just not sure how to find your way back to each other, or whether there's another way. There is.
You're doing everything right. So why does it still feel like a struggle?
You show up. You put in the time. You care about your horse more than most people understand.
But somewhere along the way, something shifted. He's tenser than he used to be. Or he was never quite relaxed to begin with. You pull, he resists. You push, he shuts down. And the harder you try, the further away that easy, willing partnership feels.
You've probably been told to use more leg. More contact. More correction.
What if the problem isn't that you're not doing enough, but that the approach itself isn't working for your horse?
There’s a different way to work with your horse
Reward-based training isn't softer or slower. It's more precise, and it gets to the root of what's actually going on between you and your horse.
I
Partnership over performance
The goal isn't a perfectly obedient horse. It's a horse that genuinely wants to work with you.
II
Results that last
Reward-based training builds understanding, not compliance. That's why the changes stick, even when you're not in the arena.
III
You stop guessing
When you understand what your horse is communicating, every session gets clearer. No more wondering what went wrong.
Hi, I’m Sally
I’m reward-based riding instructor based in Wales. I've been working with horses and riders using positive reinforcement for 8 years. Not because it's the easy route, but because I've seen what changes when a horse finally feels understood.
I work with riders at all levels. Beginners finding their footing. Experienced riders who've hit a wall. Horse owners who love their horse but dread the tension that shows up the moment they start riding. What they all have in common is that they're ready to try a different approach.
Most of my clients have already tried a lot of things. What they haven't tried yet is working with their horse instead of against him. That's where we start.
This is how we can work together

ABOUT SALLY
Hi, I’m Sally
I help riders rebuild what gets lost between them and their horse.
Not through more pressure or stricter technique, but by learning to work with your horse's nature instead of against it.
I'm based in [location] and have been teaching reward-based riding for [X] years. If you've landed here, there's a good chance something in your partnership with your horse isn't working the way you hoped. That's exactly where I come in.
How my story began
I didn't come to this work because it was easy. I came because the alternative stopped making sense.
Like a lot of people in this field, I started out training the way I was taught. Pressure and release. Corrections. Tools that promised faster results. And on the surface, it worked. Horses complied, sessions looked productive, and I thought I was doing it right.
Then I had a horse that made me stop and look more carefully. He tried. He genuinely tried. And he still got it wrong, every time. The harder I pushed, the more he shut down. That horse taught me more than any training course ever had: that compliance isn't the same as understanding, and that a horse that's tense isn't a horse that's learning.
That's what led me to positive reinforcement. Not as a philosophy, but as a method that actually explained what I was seeing. Once I started working with how horses learn rather than around it, everything changed. For my horses, and for the riders I work with.

What I focus on:
✔︎ Building confidence in horse and rider
✔︎ Understanding what your horse is communicating
✔︎ Clear, reward-based communication
What I don’t do:
𐄂 Whips, spurs, or any form of physical correction
𐄂 Dominance-based methods
𐄂 Quick fixes that create tension instead of trust
Lady came to me with a reputation. Spooky, unpredictable, not suitable for most riders. I believed I could handle her — and for a while, I managed her. There's a difference.
It took a long time to admit that managing a horse and understanding a horse are not the same thing. Lady didn't need more control. She needed someone to figure out what she was afraid of, and why — and to give her a reason to trust that things could be different.
That process changed how I teach. I stopped looking for faster ways to get compliance and started asking better questions. What is this horse trying to tell me? What would make this feel safer for her? What does she actually need to be able to do what I'm asking?
Lady is still with me. She's also the most willing horse I've ever worked with. That didn't happen by accident.
My own horse, Lady, teached me to actually listen
Your horse deserves to be understood. And so do you.

Private lessons
Private lessons give us the space to work on what your partnership actually needs, at a pace that works for both of you.
Does any of this feel familiar?
Your horse is tense, resistant, or unpredictable and you don't know why
You've had lessons before, but the advice never quite fit your horse
You can feel the connection slipping and don't know how to get it back
It doesn’t have to stay this way
You've probably already tried things. Different approaches, different trainers, different advice from the internet. And still, walks feel like a gamble and home feels like a juggling act.
From tension to trust, one session at a time
Every horse is different, and so is every rider. That's why we don't start with a fixed programme or a predetermined set of exercises. We start by looking at what's actually happening between you and your horse, and work from there.
Private lessons give us the space to go at the pace your horse needs. Some things shift quickly. Others take time. What stays consistent is the approach: clear communication, reward-based methods, and training that makes sense to your horse instead of just demanding compliance.
Clear steps, steady progress
Training doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. We’ll take things step by step.
I
We start with a conversation
Before we do anything with your horse, we talk. What's been happening, what you've tried, what you're hoping for.
II
I watch before I advise
In our first session, I observe you and your horse together. Most problems look different from the ground, and I want to see what's actually happening before we change anything.
III
We work on what matters
Each session builds on the last, using reward-based methods throughout. Progress tends to feel steadier and quieter than most riders expect.
IV
You leave with something to work on
At the end of every session, you'll know exactly what to focus on before we meet again. Clear, practical steps that fit your horse and your situation.
What's included?

Answers to your questions
-
Yes, I travel to you. Add a note here about how far you're willing to travel and whether a travel fee applies beyond a certain distance.
-
That depends on where you and your horse are starting from and what you're working toward. Some riders notice a shift after just one session. Others benefit from working together over a longer period. We'll talk about what makes sense for your situation before you commit to anything.
-
It can, yes. Horses that have had difficult experiences often need more time to build trust, and we take that seriously. We go at your horse's pace, not a predetermined one. The fact that you're asking this question already tells me you're approaching this the right way.
-
Not much. Just your horse, your usual tack, and a bit of time to talk before we start. It helps to think about what's been happening and what you'd most like to change, but there's no formal preparation required. We'll figure out the rest together.

Yes. Reward-based training works across breeds and disciplines because it's based on how horses learn, not on any particular style of riding. Whether you ride dressage, hack out, or simply want a better relationship with your horse on the ground, we can work together.
-
Absolutely. Most horses I work with have some history with pressure-based training. The transition takes patience, and every horse responds differently, but horses are remarkably adaptable. Many riders are surprised by how quickly their horse starts to engage once the pressure is removed and the communication becomes clearer.

What you’ll learn:
✔ Why your horse isn't being difficult, and what he's actually communicating
✔ The one thing that quietly increases tension, even when you're trying to do everything right
✔ What stress signals in horses actually look like, and why missing them makes things worse
✔ Why more pressure rarely solves the problem, and what to try instead
✔ How to set your horse up to succeed rather than correcting him after the fact
"I downloaded this thinking it was just another dog tip list. It wasn't. Myth #3 completely changed how I respond when my dog reacts on the leash."
